A Christmas Day

by Michael Gessner

walk around the asphalt
neighborhood took me
by some shiny silver thing.

I backed up and bent down
to study what was a carpenter’s
nail embedded in the paving

at a slant, its head half-buried,
polished by rain and the soles
of shoes, a thing alone, unused.
