Water as water

by Casey Killingsworth

I love rivers more
than oceans,
love their borders,
edges curled
around you
like you’re the child
who maybe got lost once
but then came home,
the bond
not quite a
blood brother,
(sharing
a past but with
a different father)
and I never liked
water that moved
either way,
in and out
of your life,
a tide that
never makes
up its mind
and leaves you
standing
on some shore
you can’t
recognize.
